French railway stations, etc

Thanks for your note, I’ve replied over there. On a related issue, is there any reason why Berlin Hauptbahnhof shouldn’t be at "Berlin central station"; or this, at "Prague central station"? I’d like to address it (there are a couple of other examples), but I’m not sure where to bring it up. Moonraker12 (talk) 22:53, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think one could make a good case that the use of 'Hauptbahnhof' constitutes the common name in English for the main station in German cities. @Moonraker12 Looking at this more closely, I think there will need to be discussion about the translation. It's natural in English to use something like 'Prague Central station' but that's not an accurate translation - 'Prague main station' would be acccurate, though less natural, but should it be capitalised 'Prague Main Station', so as to be a name rather than just a description? (Perhaps that's why 'Hauptbahnhof' has been retained for German-language stations, to avoid that problem!). Colonies Chris (talk) 09:05, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have observed with worry your recent mass moves of railway station articles. Your premisse implies 'station' means railway station which it does not. Since 2005, all French railway station articles have been named after their original French names. Similarly, Prague central station is Praha Hlavní Nádraží and not Prague Central station (the Czech name is Prague Central, not the central railway station in Prague.

You've cited a guideline but not linked to any agreed naming convention that was put in place between 2005 and 2010. In any case, keeping just 'station' as a suffix is both incorrectly translated and grammatically incorrect. Regards, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons 09:47, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bolquère-Eyne station

Hi Chris, I've noticed your work with the French railway stations. This one looks like it might be wrong. Also would you please be able to direct me to where the discussion about the new guideline took place? Because I think it'd be useful to bring up there the point that the template for the "previous" and "next" stations at the bottom of all these pages would need to be changed as well, to reflect the new convention. Hi Dr. Vogel - the article title you mentioned was wrong, of course - a slip of the fingers - but it's already been fixed.

The discussion was at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/France_and_French-related_articles#Naming_of_French_railway_station_articles.

The station names in the 'prev' and 'next' are built by the {{s-line}} template; in the longer term, when all French station articles have been retitled, the template should be changed too - but for the time being, that unnecessary redirect does no harm. I've just started on fixing French railway station articles. It's a great pity that they contain several simple errors: please no French flag in the infobox; "located" is used without purpose; common terms are wrongly linked; "high-speed" lacks the hyphen; and range dashes are wrong open, rather than closed. French stations, again

Hello Chris
I checked back in to the French stations discussion, and noticed you’d started moving them. I had thought there’s be a bot that could do that, but it seems there’s a lot of grunt work ahead. Are you working to a plan? I’ve just gone through the Ile de France pages; I was thinking of going on to the Normandy ones, but I don’t want to get in your way. Hi Moonraker12 - It's great to have more than on person working on the renaming. There doesn't seem to be any automated way to make it easier. I'm currently working through Category:Railway stations in Occitanie, but I've no specific plan for which category to do next. I've been going through French station articles fixing a repeated formula at the start that is fluffy, unlinking common terms, removing French flags in infoboxes, and fixing range dashes. It's a great pity these things weren't got right at the start. Tony (talk) 08:19, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tony - I agree - this is just one of many examples of sets of articles that were created in bulk, and so the whole set has similar problems that need fixed. I suppose the Category:Réseau Express Régional stations are in this renaming scope as well? Many of these are still in "X (Paris RER)" form, and there's a few without "station" at all, like Châtelet–Les Halles and Charles de Gaulle–Étoile. Any station articles named "Gare de/du/des/d'" are covered (apart from the exceptions listed in the guideline) so thanks very much for taking on this rather tedious task. Yes, now we can move to fixing templates to use the new format. The end is in sight! Those two exceptions you quoted are so well known and unambiguous that tacking on the word 'station' would be unnatural - there might be a small number of others of that type.
