New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Eejit43,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Reminders

Need clarification

Hi @Eejit43

Thanks for paying attention to my translation of Teghenyats Monastery. You've sent it to draft without mentioning the reason. To be able to improve it I need your comments to know where exatly pay attention to.

Best regards

@Nare Adams Nare Adams (talk) 07:23, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nare Adams I actually did specify a reason, that being that it needs more sources to establish notability. In fact, the far majority of the text is unreferenced and needs reliable sources in order to both prove notability, and back up the claims made in the text.
The text is also not entirely written in a neutral tone, and I see some puffery wording. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 13:48, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Eejit43 thanks for clarifications. I added sources, while the "puffery wording" is pure citation from the historians of the time. Hope you will have time to review the new version of the article. Nare Adams (talk) 20:16, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The entirety of "Architectural structures" and the far majority of "The Archaeological Description" remain unreferenced. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 20:21, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Eejit43
I appriciate your attention and aspiration to improve the article, but I have a problem. Now I can't find the article. Can you help me with it? Nare Adams (talk) 20:50, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is located at Draft:Teghenyats Monastery :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 20:51, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

afcrc-helper stuck on categories

Hi Eejit43 and thank you for the afcrc-helper script you created!

One small problem: the script seems to be stuck on Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Categories. When the tool is used, it's simply blank without any requests or error messages displayed. Clicking "run" makes it show "No requests have been handled!".

However, the script works fine on Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects, so I don't really know what's going on.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could look into this issue.

CanonNi (talk) 12:42, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look shortly, it is likely getting caught on parsing something in a request... ~ Eejit43 (talk) 13:59, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've added some new checks to handle more variations in the way requests are written, and it should now run properly! Thanks so much for reporting, and I'm glad you're finding the script useful! :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 14:25, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The script now works. Thank you so much! CanonNi (talk) 14:27, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Category request" and "Redirect request" heading prefixes

Hi,

thanks for all your work at WP:AfC/R! It occurred to me just now that putting "Category request" at the start of every section heading on the category requests page and "Redirect request" on the redirect requests page doesn't make much sense. It did make sense when there was a joint page for both, obviously, but now it's just clutter. Dropping the phrases wouldn't make much of a difference on the pages themselves, I'd say - but it would be quite noticeable in their sidebar ToCs, where they currently have the effect of making many entries a line longer than they really need to be. To illustrate:

I know next to nothing about the automated aspect of these pages, though, so I figured I'd just pass this thought along to someone who hopefully knows a bit more.

Thanks again!

That's a very good idea! The only issue I could see running into would be for empty requests, but I think we could work around that. I'll propose this to other editors and see what they think! Thank you! :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 21:43, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Eejit43,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Change made for Red Line

Dear @Eejit43,

The Karnataka State Govt had prepared the DPR for this new line and I've attached the references for this proposed line. Kindly check and revert back the page. Thank you. Santosh4118 (talk) 17:29, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't contest that, but Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, and the track's notability hasn't been proven. I'm not going to edit war with you, however, and will wait for another reviewer to take a look. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 17:32, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect-helper script

Sorry to bother you— would you mind adding the {{r to natural disambiguation}} rcat to the list of available templates in your redirect-helper script? Thanks, Cremastra (talk) 19:56, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! If you could add it to WP:ALLRCATS (along with {{R from natural disambiguation}} it seems...), that would help, as I have a a script that parses templates from that list. If not I'll get to it later today. Thanks for pointing that out! :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 20:09, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done— thanks, I hadn't seen that listing before. Cremastra (talk) 20:13, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done on my end! Thanks so much! ~ Eejit43 (talk) 20:15, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way for you guys at categories for creation to take a more critical eye to the Churches by dependent territory? I've had a bring a ton of these to CFD lately. The IP that's requesting them is a known troll WP:LTA/HKGW. Mason (talk) 00:48, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I wasn't aware of this LTA case. To be honest the categories seemed fine when going through them originally, especially as there are likely more pages that would apply. I'm not opposed to any of the proposals you have made, and please do check the previous approved requests at WP:AFC/C if you'd like.
I'll make sure not to accept any similar requests, thanks! ~ Eejit43 (talk) 00:53, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! I wasn't aware that it was a long-term issue until a day or two ago. And, I agree that on the surface the nominations look fine, but what seems to happen is two things: 1) the category doesn't actually need diffusion by century, and 2) the IP is taking a really unique interpretation of dependent territory, and is using this as a means to remove them from the parent nation the category is nested in. Mason (talk) 01:10, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CanonNi I wanted to bring this to your attention as well, as you have also been active at AfC/C recently. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 01:13, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand and will pay more attention to these types of category requests. Thank you for informing me. CanonNi (talk) 01:15, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both! :) Mason (talk) 01:31, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What was happening on Talk:2021-2022 inflation surge?

AnomieBOT was probably running into a misbug where it bypasses triple-and-more redirects but keeps re-processing the page. Normally this doesn't cause a problem since the re-processing is normally just null edits. But why were you edit warring with it to remove a colon from the target and remove the (useful, IMO) redirect categorization templates? Anomie 11:50, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
