Unsheathing a kukri for combat and not using it is the origin of the "myth," and Gurkha soldiers (at least during WW2) are known to have punished themselves for doing so. This is due to the fact that if the kukri wasn't used (typically during a night raid), then the rifle was the objectively superior option for protecting oneself and ones comrades.
